Cobb County Schools Recommended For Re-Accreditation From SACS
The Cobb County Board of Education learned today that the District will receive a recommendation for a five-year
re-accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Cobb first earned district accreditation in 2004 and was one of the first three districts in the
nation to receive the designation. The District will receive formal notice of accreditation from SACS within 30 days.
The recommendation comes after a comprehensive, three-day
evaluation by a delegation of SACS representatives. The evaluation group was comprised of 27 education professionals from throughout the Southeast. Nearly 1,200 parents, students,
teachers, principals, administrators and District support staff were interviewed regarding a variety of standards and best practices that helped the evaluation team determine
Cobb’s accreditation status.
“I am extremely pleased that the SACS committee provided such a resoundingly enthusiastic opinion of our school district and issued a favorable
recommendation,” said Dr. John Abraham, Chairman of the Cobb County Board of Education. “We believe the Cobb County School District is one of the best public school systems in the
nation. It's nice to see education professionals affirm that belief through an objective and unbiased review. The few recommendations made by the committee we intend to begin
addressing immediately, and we look forward to having our district-wide accreditation re-established for five years. We appreciate the committee’s hard work over the past three
days and thank them for providing such a thorough evaluation.”
SACS, paired with the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and
the National Study of School Evaluation (NSSE) comprise the AdvancED organization, which seeks to help schools and school systems improve student success through a stringent set
of standards. By evaluating factors such as governance, curriculum, instructional design, student assessment, and communications, SACS offers district accreditation only to
systems meeting the highest levels of educational quality. For more information, visit the AdvancED Web site at www.advanc-ed.org.
